Concrete for the Lapeer County Seat
Lapeer is the county seat of Lapeer County, east of Flint on the Flint River, and it is the eastern edge of the area our concrete contractors cover. The city was settled in 1831, incorporated as a village in 1858 and as a city in 1869. It had 9,023 residents and 3,921 housing units in the 2020 census. Lapeer has old homes near its downtown and courthouse, plus newer neighborhoods on the edges, and its concrete reflects both.
Two settlements and a swamp
The city began as two settlements. Alvin N. Hart platted the village of Lapeer on November 8, 1833, and Enoch J. White founded Whitesville, now the western part of the city, the same year. A tamarack swamp once separated them. Tamarack swamps leave behind wet, organic soil, and where old swampy ground lies under a yard or driveway, concrete is more likely to settle. When we break out old concrete in Lapeer, we look at what is underneath and dig out and replace soft soil with compacted stone before we pour.
Courthouse town housing
Wikipedia describes the Lapeer County Courthouse as the oldest continuously running courthouse in Michigan. The blocks near downtown, around Court and Nepessing streets, hold some of the city's oldest homes. Front walks and porch steps there often date from many different decades. We replace what has failed, match broom direction and joint spacing, and protect old foundations when we work next to them. Lumbering was the early economy and brought the New York Central and Grand Trunk railroads, and the homes along the old rail corridors tend to sit on smaller lots with narrower drives.
Steady growth
Lapeer had 6,143 residents in 1950, 7,759 in 1990 and 9,072 in 2000, and has held near 9,000 since. That slower, steadier growth means a mix of house ages rather than one big subdivision era. On any given street, we might replace a 1950s stoop and a 1990s driveway on neighboring lots. We plan each job from what we see on site.
Roads and permits
M-21 and M-24 meet in Lapeer, and the city is a founding member of the Karegnondi Water Authority, joining on October 26, 2010. Work inside the city goes through the City of Lapeer, while addresses in the surrounding townships fall under the township and, for approaches on county roads, the Lapeer County road agency. We check what applies before we schedule. Our Lapeer work covers driveways, patios, stamped concrete, walks and steps, garage and shed slabs, and concrete repair. Call (810) 428-0447 to book a visit.

Lapeer Questions
Do you travel to Lapeer from the Flint area?
Yes. Lapeer is the east end of our service area, and we schedule jobs there regularly.
Why does concrete settle on the west side of Lapeer?
Some parts of the city sit on ground that was once swampy, and soft or organic soil compresses under a slab. We check the subgrade and build a deeper compacted base where needed.
Can you match new steps to an older home near downtown?
Yes. We size the steps to the porch and door, match the finish to nearby concrete as closely as we can, and take care around the old foundation.
