Concrete for Lake Country
Fenton Township is lake country, and concrete contractors working here plan around water more than almost anywhere else near Flint. The township covers about 27.5 square miles, and 3.7 square miles of that, 13.29 percent, is water. It surrounds the cities of Fenton and Linden and includes the Lake Fenton census-designated place, with the communities of Lakeside and Bayport Park. The population was 12,968 in 2000 and 16,843 in 2020, so a lot of the township's concrete is from the last few decades.
High water tables and wet soils
A 2021 natural resources report posted on the township's website for a roughly 30-acre site mapped Conover loam over nearly half the area, with the water table about 6 to 18 inches down, plus poorly drained Brookston loam and some muck soils. That is one site, not the whole township, but it shows what we often find near lakes and wetlands here: soil that stays wet and a water table close to the surface. Concrete on wet, soft ground settles unless the base is built for it. We dig out soft material, build up a thicker layer of compacted stone and set grade so water drains away from the slab.
Lake lots
Lake homes bring their own challenges: tight access down a shared drive, slopes toward the water, and limited room for a concrete truck. We plan delivery ahead of time and use a pump or buggies when we have to. We also set slope so runoff from a new patio or drive is not sent straight into the lake, and we protect shoreline areas during the work.
Subdivisions and newer homes
Away from the water, the township's subdivisions bring the usual mix of driveway replacement and widening, back patios, stamped concrete, front walks and steps, and garage floors. Newer homes often have larger drives and patios, and HOA rules may control width, color or placement. We design within those rules.
Township history and permits
Clark Dibble bought the first land in March 1834, and the township was organized on March 6, 1838, becoming a charter township in 1980. Linden separated from the township when it became a city in 1988. Work in the township goes through Fenton Township, not the City of Fenton, and approaches on county roads go through the Genesee County Road Commission. Fenton Township Questions
Can you pour a driveway on a lake lot with tight access?
Yes. We plan delivery ahead of time and use a pump or buggies when a truck cannot reach, and we protect lawns and shoreline along the route.
Why does concrete settle near the lakes?
Soils near lakes and wetlands are often wet, with a water table close to the surface. Without a deeper compacted base, the slab settles. We check the subgrade and build the base for it.
Is Fenton Township the same as the City of Fenton?
No. The township is a separate government that surrounds the city. Permits come from whichever one covers your address.
