Concrete Work in the Village of Holly

Holly is just across the county line in north Oakland County, about 15 miles south of Flint, and it is a regular stop for our concrete contractors working the south end of the service area. The village was incorporated in 1865 and sits within Holly Township. The 2020 census counted 5,997 residents and 2,683 housing units. Holly's population was already 1,429 by 1870, so the village has some of the oldest housing near Flint, along with newer homes on its edges.

A railroad junction town

Holly grew at a railroad junction. Holly Union Depot was built in 1886 and is now the focus of a restoration effort, and Crapo Park, named for Governor Henry H. Crapo, is a popular spot for watching trains near the junction. The village also has a downtown commercial district and the well-known Battle Alley. On the older residential blocks around downtown, the concrete jobs are usually front walks, porch steps, narrow driveways and slabs for detached garages. These homes need careful work around old foundations, and new steps that fit the proportions of the porch.

Water and higher ground

Holly sits at about 928 feet, among the highest towns we serve, and more than 9 percent of the village's area is water. The Shiawassee River Heritage Water Trail starts at WaterWorks Park, which has a canoe and kayak launch. Holly Recreation Area is nearby and the Mount Holly ski area is about 3 miles northeast. Ground around lakes and the river can be wet, and higher, hillier lots can be steep. Both affect how we pour: wet areas get deeper base work, and sloped drives get careful forming, a stiffer mix and a rougher broom finish for winter traction.

Because Holly is in Oakland County, not Genesee, the permit offices are different from most of our Flint-area jobs. Work inside the village goes through the Village of Holly, and addresses outside the village fall under Holly Township. Driveway approaches onto county roads go through the Road Commission for Oakland County rather than Genesee's. We check which offices apply to your lot and handle the permits for the work we do.
