Concrete Work in Birch Run

Birch Run is a small Saginaw County village north of Flint, and our concrete contractors cover it from the Flint area along I-75. The village began in 1852 as a station on the Pere Marquette Railroad, founded by its first postmaster, John Moore, and took its name from a creek running through a large stand of birch. It was incorporated in the mid-1950s and sits within Birch Run Township. The 2020 census counted 1,525 residents and 735 housing units.

A jump in the 1990s

Birch Run's population was 932 in 1970, 1,196 in 1980 and 992 in 1990, then jumped to 1,653 in 2000. That 1990s growth added a good share of the village's homes in a short span, and the driveways, patios and walks poured then are now 25 to 35 years old. That is the age when cracked aprons, scaled surfaces and patios tipping toward the house start to show up. Older homes near the original village center have concrete from much earlier decades, often patched more than once.

Low, flat ground

Birch Run sits at about 633 feet, one of the lowest points in our service area and more than 100 feet below Flint. Flat, low ground drains slowly, so every slab we pour here gets slope set carefully toward the yard or street, and we pay attention to where downspouts and sump lines empty. Where we find soft or wet subgrade under failing concrete, we dig it out and replace it with compacted stone before we pour.

Outlet traffic and busy roads

Birch Run Premium Outlets opened in 1986 and has been described as the largest outlet mall in the Midwest, with 108 stores as of November 2017. The Birch Run Expo Center is nearby. Heavy shopping traffic and the I-75 corridor mean a lot of road salt and plowing in winter, which is hard on driveway aprons and walks near the street. We pour air-entrained concrete for outdoor work and recommend sealing new slabs once they cure.

Saginaw County permits

Work inside the village goes through the Village of Birch Run, and addresses outside it fall under Birch Run Township and the Saginaw County road agency for approaches on county roads. We check what applies before we schedule. Our Birch Run work covers driveways, patios, stamped concrete, walks and steps, garage and shed slabs, and concrete repair. Birch Run Questions

Do you cover Birch Run from Flint?

Yes. Birch Run is a short drive up I-75 from Flint and part of our regular service area.

My 1990s driveway is cracking at the street. What are my options?

If the rest of the drive is sound, we can replace just the apron with a clean saw-cut joint. If cracking and scaling are spread across the slab, a full replacement is usually the better choice.

Do I need a permit for a new driveway in Birch Run?

It depends on the work and where it meets the road. We check with the village or township, and the county road agency if needed, before we start.
